Okay so to start off I LOVED THIS MOVIE. It's one of the best movies I've seen in a hot minute. From beginning to end I was never bored and was constantly wanting to see more. The story line had so many little nuances that just made the plot that much better. When Charlie gets the car from his dad that ruined their relationship it was almost a slap in the face. But that car is the first thing that brings him and Raymond together because that's how Charlie finds out their brothers, so that comes full circle for me. This movie was ahead of it's time in a sense that it brought light to people with different types of special needs and showed the world they are just as much people as everyone else. Although it wasn't ahead of it's time in many parts of the movie like when Charlie uses slurs in the beginning towards him and meets him with a type of attitude and lack of patience that most would at that time. Also the fact that they put Raymond in a mental institution just for having autism just shows how ignorant they really were about people with autism or anything like it. I already loved it from the beginning just because it brought awareness to the fact that someone with autism is just as much smart, human, and a person as everyone else, and people needed to see that during that time period and still do. In the beginning of the movie Charlie treats Raymond like he's stupid or crazy, but in reality he just hasn't taken the time yet to truly get to know him and his quirks. It's sad because he came to realize that Raymond is an insanely smart person and just has some weaknesses like everyone else, but has so many strengths as well. This movie also brought light on Raymond's different quirks he dealt with to live in peace which people probably never understood at the time. Also everyone has their own "thing" that makes them different and different things they do to live their lives in harmony. Another thing I noticed was the insane amount of change that took place within Charlie and Raymond. Charlie was originally this selfish guy who only cared about himself and his own needs and never really capable of love. Throughout the movie we see him slowly changing into someone who is capable of loving and actually caring for others. For me this change really starts becoming noticeable when he arranges Raymond's bed and shoes just the way he likes it and puts sunscreen on him so he doesn't burn because he doesn't want the top of the car up. He learns Raymond's quirks and deals with them and helps him keep his schedule and ways so he can be happy. Also one of the biggest signs he changed was when he was offered the money if he just walked away and he says no which shows it's no longer about the money anymore it's truly just about being with his brother, being close to him, and caring for him. For Raymond, in the beginning he didn't like being touched and had to have his schedule and clothes and whole life exactly the same everyday. Slowly from being with Charlie he loosens the reins a little on his ways and learns that some things being different is okay. He learned how to joke and learns that KMART SUCKS which just shows that he's capable of so much more if people just give him the chance. At the end when he calls him main man and lets Charlie kiss him I almost lost it. This movie not only is for your eyes and ears, but it most definitely pulls on your heart strings as well. One thing I didn't enjoy about the movie though was the ending. Everyone wants to see a happy ending and to me this just wasn't it. I wanted him so badly to go back home with Charlie and them to live together because that's what Raymond wanted and what he needed. They both needed each other, but instead he gets on a train and leaves. And then BOOM, it's the end. Which sucked!! But all in all I highly recommend you guys to watch this movie it was funny at times, sad at time, and just one of the cutest movies I've seen!
